Knowing what is in the rack

2D coded tubes, like those from FluidX or Micronic, are excellent for processing and storing samples. In order to gain the maximum flexibility, scanning racks is an essential step. Whether you're pipetting into the rack, or have picked tubes into it, the rack contents need to be known before the next step can be taken.

The LightPick rack scanner is not as revolutionary as the LightPick platform itself. However, with our experience in building the LightPick software and hardware, we can provide a scanner that is both easier to use and more affordable than existing commercial options.

A simpler scanner workflow

Existing commercial rack scanners are held back by their software. They are often designed for a specific workflow, and require multiple steps to get the scan result into the LIMS. File based workflows are common, but these are not suited for providing feedback to the operator on whether the scan was accepted by the LIMS. This can result in silently losing track of sample locations.

The LightPick rack scanner is designed to be integrated with the LightPick software and the LIMS-facing workflow. This allows for simple, quick and reliable operation, where the operator can place the rack in the scanner, and receives direct feedback from the LIMS on whether the scan was successful.

Typical workflow

  1. A rack is prepared by picking or by pipetting.
  2. The operator places the rack in the LightPick rack scanner.
  3. The scanner automatically captures the rack contents and sends the data to the LIMS.
  4. The LightPick software provides direct feedback from the LIMS to the operator.

Design priorities

Affordable and predictable

A low system cost and a clear pricing model are primary design requirements.

Fast and reliable

The scanner is being developed for dependable rack capture without slowing the workflow.

Minimal interaction

Rack detection can start the scan without a separate operation in the scanner software.

Direct LIMS integration

Scan results can be sent to the LIMS directly, without manual actions or files being saved.

System and integration

The scanner is intended to share the LightPick workstation and software integration. This keeps projection, scanning and the LIMS-facing workflow in one system, with fewer separate tools at the bench.

The rack scanner complements LightPick tube picking. It is not intended to replace the LIMS or the workflow logic maintained there.
